TEC Square and ederna have partnered to supply Cold Concentration Solutions for Coffee and Tea
TEC Square works together with Ederna to provide solutions for Engineered Osmosis for the Coffee and Tea concentrate market. TEC Square will incorporate this technology in its overall program and will be able to supply complete coffee and tea extraction / concentration solutions.
Ederna’s Engineered Osmosis solution is an advanced concentration process using ederna’s evapEOs® proprietary technology. This revolutionary process consists of a combination of Reverse Osmosis and Forward Osmosis.
- Reverse Osmosis uses hydraulic pressure to overcome osmotic pressure for transport of water to the less saline side. This technology has a high flux, and is ideal for highly dilute products.
- Forward Osmosis uses a draw solution to transport water naturally from the dilute product to the draw solution using a difference of osmotic pressure. The proprietary draw solution is a food grade liquid and has GRAS status. The system is supplied with integrated recovery technology. As such, this technology is well adapted to achieve high concentrations.
This advanced osmosis process has marked advantages over other technologies:
- It outperforms other cold concentration technologies, as freeze concentration, in investment cost, operating costs, flexibility, and final concentration.
- It also outperforms thermal concentration methods in terms of quality and investment cost.
The final concentration using this method is limited to around 40° Brix, (Product depending), making it an ideal method of concentration for cold extracted products delivered in a concentrate form, or for the concentration of aroma extract in a high pressure extraction set-up.
For higher concentrations with similar quality, please refer to our Low-Impact Thermal Concentration page. With this method concentration, 60 °Brix are not an exception.
Our partner ederna has a test centre located in France.
Please let us know if you would like to avail of this possibility.

Characteristics and Advantages of our evapEOs Cold Concentration Process
Characteristics | Advantages | |
---|---|---|
Concentration Technology | The Engineered Osmosis process is characterised by a 2-step concentration method:
Process Temperatures | We work at low process temperatures, guaranteeing a quality solution for temperature sensitive products |
Capital Expenditure | Lower capital expenditure as high-end concentration methods. As the process is developed for a higher quality product segment, we compare our solution mainly to these technologies. |
Operational Costs | Low operational costs in steam and chilled water. Membranes are, however, considered a “wear and tear” part, and will need to be replaced every 1 to 2 years. |
Maximum Concentration | This technology can achieve up to a remarkably high concentration of 35-40%, depending on product. |
Product Losses | Very low product losses at high concentrations, as the Forward Osmosis membranes are not subjected to a pressure differential.
CIP | Easy and straight forward CIP. Fully automated solution.
Environmental Impact | Low energy usage and low waste generation give this process a “green” label.
